While I never regret moving here to Wilmington, NC – there are those moments that I do wish I could spend more time with my friends and family back home! I especially miss the opportunities to just pop over to a friends house for dinner, or share a morning coffee with my dad.

This recipe will warm your belly, and your heart! From Amish Country in Pennsylvania comes Cheddar Chowder – a dinner from my best friend’s mother in law!

I grew up with Steve in farm-town USA. If there’s one thing we share, it’s our love for the Amish homelands; and, well, our love for my Hope.

I met Hope the night before she and Steve got engaged. Then, going our separate ways, I ended up missing the wedding and not seeing her again until I moved to Wilmington (an hour south of where she and Steve were stationed)!

Steve’s time in the Marines wasn’t our favorite. But, his deployments gave me the opportunity to get to know and love Hope.

Fast forward, she’s got two baby boys, one sweet princess, and is a total super-mom! Needless to say, all recipes from Hope are hungry-husband-guaranteed! And since this one came first from Steve’s mom Darlene, it’s double verified! (Trust me, I ate a lot in that house growing up!)

Cheddar Chowder Recipe | The Salt Water Wfie


  • 2 cups water
  • 2 cups diced, unpeeled red potatoes
  • 1/2 cup diced carrots
  • 1/2 cup diced celery
  • 1/4 cup chopped onion
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar
  • 1 cup chopped ham
  1. Combine water, potatoes, carrots, celery, onion, salt and pepper in a large kettle. Boil 10-12 minutes.
  2. In a medium skillet, melt butter. Add flour and stir until smooth.
  3. Slowly add milk and cook until thickened.
  4. Add grated cheese and stir until melted.
  5. Add this mixture and your chopped ham to the boiling vegetables.
  6. Serves well with cornbread or crescent rolls!

*** A great part about this recipe is that you can change how much you want to use of each vegetable! If you prefer more potatoes or less celery, give it a shot! ***
