How To Start Your Blog

I hear it all the time – Oh that’s so cool! I’d love to have a blog, I just don’t know how! Or, I’m not tech-friendly enough to make something like that! Or Oh, I don’t think anyone would want to read what I have to say!

NEWSFLASH. I didn’t know how to create or maintain a blog when I started out. And nope – no one read what I wrote.

I took the time to learn just enough to create my own site, and start writing! The rest? History. Well, history that I’ll touch more on down the road. I’ve learned a lot!

The best part is that starting a blog (or your own online shop or website) really just takes three simple steps! Yep! Just three!

STEP 1 – SET UP YOUR BLOG NAME & HOSTING

Ok – this is fun! Have you already thought about what your blog name will be? Have you run it through social media to make sure you can get the matching Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest accounts?

You’re going to want to start out on BLUEHOST. While there are quite a few different options for hosting, we highly recommend BLUEHOST because it’s easy to use and has great customer service. Not to mention, it’s pretty dang cheap. This is the hosting service that we have used since the beginning of The Salt Water Wife – no complaints!

*Actually their plans are being discounted right now – so they are even cheaper*

If you think you might want to create more than one blog or website, I would definitely recommend the prime account. BUT, if you’re just getting started and don’t have any ideas past your first blog, there’s nothing wrong with the basic account. You can always upgrade later on, depending on your needs.

Next – you’re going to name your blog! Also known as, choosing your domain.

So, our domain name is TheSaltWaterWife.com – make sense? This is where I’d suggest making sure the matching social media accounts are available. Ideally, if you’re interested in marketing and sharing your blog, you’re going to want consistent names throughout your accounts.

Now you just need to pay! Usually they will offer you a bundle deal, like paying for a year (or more) up front rather than monthly. This is usually a great option and will save you a good amount of money. I assume you want to blog longer than one month…

Now that you have your Bluehost account, you can log in! Which means you’re ready for

STEP 2 – INSTALLING WORDPRESS

Are there other options? Sure! But we only recommend products that we use and love. So, we highly recommend using wordpress to create your site.

Think of it this way, ” target=”_blank” rel=”noopener”>BLUEHOST is where your site is. WORDPRESS is what your site is. Now that you have a ” target=”_blank” rel=”noopener”>BLUEHOST account, you have your space online. But now we want you to create what you want to put there! This is where wordpress comes in.

Go ahead and log in to your BLUEHOST account, and choose WORDPRESS as your Website Builder. Click on Install (keep choosing the green buttons).

That’s it! Now that you’ve installed wordpress, you can log in (with the name and password you created during installation) at

http://www.YOURBLOGNAME.com/wp-admin

Bookmark that page – because that’s where you’re always going to login on your end to write your posts and work on your site. So, now your site exists! And you’re ready for…

STEP 3 – DESIGN YOUR SITE

And no, you don’t need an ounce of HTML to get started here. WordPress offers a skazillion free themes – and most of them are great. But you can also choose a premium theme, which are usually better looking, or offer more customization.

Our blog theme comes from SoloPine.com – easy to use and again, great customer support. Whether you’re creating an online shop, or starting a blog, they will have a theme that you can customize to make your own.

THAT’S IT! YOU’RE READY TO WRITE!

Is it really that simple? Yes. Yes it is. Your blog is now up and running. Now all you have to do is login to wordpress and start writing! You’ll see over time that there are a lot of ways to customize your blog – but those are hard to see until you have a few posts up. You can’t change much on a blank page.
